Formia Smart VOC incinerator will be tested for pulp mills’ waste water VOC control under the Life+ project

Formia’s proprietary catalytic VOC incineration technology will be evaluated for VOC abatement in mechanical pulping waste water processes, together with biofiltration and UV-filtration technologies. Testing will be carried out at Stora Enso mills in Finland and Germany, during the European Commission’s environmental Life+ project. The project will result in comprehensive feasibility information about the three different VOC emission cleaning technologies by the end of 2013. The project outcomes can also be utilized by regulatory authorities.

Formia will deliver an energy-efficient and compact Twin Bed double catalytic VOC incinerator for the project. Piloting will be made with small scale installations to gather experience for full size system design and dimensioning. The performance of each abatement systems will be tested in both aerobic and anaerobic waste water purification processes of pulp mills. Aerobic tests will be conducted in Anjalankoski, Finland during the summer 2011, and anaerobic tests in Maxau, Germany during the summer 2012.

“Compared to industrial solvent use applications, air flows and VOC concentrations in the exhaust gases from the pulping waste water processes are relatively low, and the water content is rather high”, explains Janne Salmi, the Technology Manager of Formia Emissions Control Oy. “In addition to increased understanding on the VOC abatement in the pulp industry, the project will bring us detailed information on the features and performance of our catalytic VOC incinerators for developing their application potential also in other problematic VOC sources”, Salmi continues.

The Life+ project is a continuation for the first Life VOCless Pulping -project in 2006-2009, which focused on reducing VOC emissions from mechanical pulping production. During the first project it was observed that waste waters of pulp mills contain nearly same amount of VOC compounds as what is emitted from pulping processes. Due to this it is important to study aerobic and anaerobic waste water purification processes of mechanical pulping mills in respect to VOC load into the nature.
